Zillah had asked you many times if you were sure. You could just come stay with her, she said. Get out of here for good. Go somewhere you never had to risk seeing them again. You had declined each time. You didn’t expect her to understand, but… there was something about this place. These Trees. No matter how you felt about your family… it felt wrong to leave entirely.

The occasion is inevitably rather formal. The room is filled with many faces, new and old. Chiro, with her closest confidante Emery by her side. Vesper Costello, with Vincent von Unten not too far away. Magnolia and many high-ranking Knights. Established scholars. The Rat King himself, the proud host. Even Cole. The Student and the Master

As I peer back on the many years of my life stretching behind me like spectres, I find amidst them a few gems that I frequent regularly. Of course there are the months I first learned the giddy joys of flight, or the heady triumph of the day I summited the Icespire Peaks, or the dizzying ecstasy of escaping the Reaching Spirit. Yet amid those fondest memories lies what to an outside observer would appear an outlier. I am of course speaking of the day young Mas…

The Field

Once upon a time there lay a field next to a lake. In this field lived a vast array of insects, arachnids, rodents and rabbits, each crafting their own home according to their instincts: webs and burrows and dens and nests. Then the first humans appeared and, finding the soil was a desirable quality and the lake a satisfying size, they too built their homes amid the grasses: squat huts out of mud bricks and woven thatch. Time passed and the lake swelled in size and the nearby s…

The Spirit of Community

All eyes focus on the stage as the storyteller's performance commences.

The protagonist is a flurry of movement, and yet they do not move. They carry no trinkets. Slight traces of sorrowful colours creep amongst the bright and vivid ones swirling across their skin. One tentacle remains always limp and grounded, but is hidden by the constant movement of the other tentacles.

Down by the winding river upon those windswept Plains, a cow sat and watched the water pass him by.

“I kept the dream alive, sis,” he told the air. “Like I hope you’d’ve wanted. I tried to do the best by it. The right thing. Like you and I always talked ‘bout.” The wind blows stiffly, tousling the straw hat perched upon Boy’s head.

“And thus the Council of Spirits convened by the Shore, to witness the new accord between It That Hungers and animal-kind. And thus was it agreed, that animals and It That Hungers alike would work together to find ways to change Its nature. That It That Hungers would be honoured by the animals, and that It would withdraw beneath the lake until such a time that It could safely re-emerge, without being compelled to hunt. And thus do we keep the Hungry One in our thoughts, knowing that It …

The Empress Penguin

The Empress always had a talent for cutting an impressive silhouette. Unusually tall amongst the penguins, she was always easy to spot amongst her followers. Sometimes this was to her detriment, such as during an embarrassing incident involving a certain squirrel and the Boy's Cows. Today though, she is easily spotted by the diminutive penguin making their way along the beach towards her.

In a Shelter in the Suburbs, a group of young animals gathered around a raven. Storytime was always their favourite part of the day. The raven was just finishing off one of their stories.

“...and so the animals worked together, alongside the White Raccoon themself, and many other Spirits, to put a stop to Winter and end its wrath once and for all!”
